When thymalfasin comes up

Caution notes

The product matters as much as the name.

The mix-up

Myth: Mild reactions in studies settle the question for any product with the same name.

The answer

Results from supervised thymosin alpha-1 studies do not establish that an unapproved product with the same name is safe.

What studies reported

The FDA, the US medicine regulator, reviewed study reports in 2024.

It lists soreness, redness and irritation where the injection went in as the most common side effects.

In studies of people with hepatitis B, a liver infection, a blood-test number used to check the liver rose sharply. That reports a test change; it does not by itself show that the infection worsened.

Some reports concerned people who had a stem-cell transplant: they were given cells that can make new blood cells. Reports in that group included a blood disorder that caused death and a transplant that failed.

Those reports do not establish that the peptide caused the events, or how often they occur.

What remained uncertain about quality

In its 2024 review, the FDA found gaps in information about the raw ingredient's purity and how it can clump together.

Clumps and unwanted material can prompt the body's immune defences to treat an injected peptide as an invader.

Personal questions need your doctor

There is no US medicine label reviewed by the FDA for this peptide as of September 28, 2026. That leaves no such label explaining its use in pregnancy, its effects on other medicines or who needs to avoid it.

The FDA's 2024 account of the Italian label rules out use in children, pregnancy and breastfeeding.

That account also calls for care with allergies and medicines that act on immune defences.

It calls for a review of each person's situation with autoimmune disease, where the body's defences attack its own tissues.

When to get urgent help

MedlinePlus lists these possible signs of a severe allergic reaction: difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a swollen face or tongue.

If you suspect a severe allergic reaction, call 911 or head to the closest emergency room.

MedWatch is the FDA's free way for patients to report a medicine problem; reporting does not replace urgent care.
